Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
Jesus. Matthew 6:19. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 11 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing, PT 2.
Jesus’ words are unmistakable: don’t set your sights on earthly gains. As with other parts of Jesus’ mountainside teaching, his words can be twisted. He isn’t advocating irrational or irresponsible financial practices, but instead reminding us of the short-lived nature of earthly treasure. EVERYTHING collected here is vulnerable to loss—whether from a stock market crash; a raging wildfire; a flash flood; a whirling tornado; or an armed robbery. No matter our prayers and diligence, time and chance happen to all. Investing our limited time and health to stack up treasures here is a dangerous misuse of time—and subject to freak loss and sticky fingers. Resist the temptation. Your security is not in the money you make but the Savior you trust.
