Nathan:

3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Paul. Phil. 2:3-4. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 23 of 30 Days to a Better Marriage. Look out for the best interests of your spouse. How often, when making decisions, do you really, truly think about what’s really in the best interests of your spouse. Not just what won’t irritate or upset them—but what would really, truly cause them to flourish. I’ve often found myself begrudgingly altering my course to preserve marital peace, and hopefully I’m the exception here. Paul is challenging us to a whole different course. To actually plotting, intelligently, deliberately, how to serve the best interests of our spouse. He doesn’t say not to have personal interests, but rather to hold both, to navigate the inevitable conflicts of interest with the benefit of the other in mind, rather than our own. To consider their interests of greater value than our own.
