For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Gabriel. Luke 1:37. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 24 of 30 Days in the Gospels. What a promise. The bedrock of this promise? God. He is the key ingredient. Take him out, and the rest is simply meaningless. God grounds this promise in certainty and reality. God brings the power to the table. He’s the one who defines the nothing. Here, Mary is overwhelmed with trepidation at the promise that she will be the mother of God, while still being unwed. The nothing here, are the apparently insurmountable circumstances that stand between Mary and her giving birth to the Son of God. Nothing, said the angel, that Mary saw as an obstacle, could prevent God from carrying out his word. God is the God of the impossible. No, this promise isn’t an unconditional nothing, there are still realities that hold back God’s hand—such as human freewill—yet this promise expands the possible beyond our wildest dreams. “With God nothing will be impossible” and if Mary’s story is any evidence, the possibilities are far larger than our grandest dreams.
