Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Solomon. Proverbs 27:1. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 28 of 30 Days of Wisdom. Life is tentative. We know where we’ve been, we have some idea of where we are—but everything next is but a hopeful dream. Now is not the time to recount stories of surprising success or unexpected tragedy. It is a moment to ground ourselves in what it is to be human—a subject we’d often prefer leaving in the shadows, forgotten. All of our schemes for controlling the future are at best, mere illusions. Our carefully-laid plans grant us no hold on tomorrow. For us, tomorrow is always tentative, always a risk, always unknown. It is wise to plan, anticipate, hope—but it must always be done in the humble admission that tomorrow is never ours, this moment alone—this moment of immediate awareness is where life happens for us. We live now, not yesterday, nor tomorrow.
