Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Jesus. Matthew 7:7–8. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 27 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing, PT 2.
What an incredible, generous promise. In Jesus’ conversation about the kingdom, he invites us to ask for it, seek for it, and knock. Whatever we need for the advancement of the kingdom in our lives and world will be given—but only in response to our asking, seeking, knocking. There is no word on how long it will take for the answer to come—only that it will. And there’s an important caveat: are we open to—and looking for—the answer that will be given? I have heard on more than one occasion about someone asking God to reveal himself—and complaining that he simply isn’t coming through. Their conclusion: God must not be listening—and maybe doesn’t even exist. I think there’s a catch in this way of ‘proving’ the existence of God: maybe we aren’t open to the ways he’s showing up? Maybe we’re expecting him to come through in a specific way—but he’s doing things in unexpected ways.
