Matthew 7:18–19 (NKJV): A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Jesus. Matthew 7:18, 19. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 2 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing, pt 3–and other sayings of Jesus.
Pretty straight words from Jesus. This is a law of life. And it’s both encouraging. And sobering. If our lives are nourished by the rich current of God’s grace—good fruit is inevitable. In fact, whenever we see good fruit in our lives it’s proof-positive that God is doing something. On another note, when there’s bad fruit—quick temper, manipulation, insisting on our way—the secret solution isn’t trying harder to be good, it’s an inner change that only God can do. When we accept into our lives the transforming work of Christ, the bad fruit will simply be eliminated as a natural outcome of His transforming work. We can spin our wheels trying to be good, from bad stock but we’ll only wind up increasingly frustrated and discouraged.
