The upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain
in it; But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be
uprooted from it.
Solomon. Proverbs 2:21 & 22. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 20 of ANOTHER 30
Days of Wisdom. While the passage has prophetic overtones, it can also be said, in the context of these first two chapters, that this isn’t necessarily a prophetic prediction. Rather, the author may simply be observing, in part, the inevitable cause and effect nature of reality: the course of evil is ultimately terminal, unsustainable, while the course of right is enduring, ultimately eternal. Living a life aligned with the moral fabric encoded in reality necessarily has an enduring, positive impact. As following a good maintenance schedule on a vehicle goes a long way toward ensuring many happy miles of driving, so is the impact of living a life guided by the principles of wisdom. Conversely, the wicked—those rejecting wisdom’s insight—have chosen a course that is itself destroying them. In a persistent rejection of wisdom, we human beings actively orchestrate our own demise. The very principles of evil we embrace are laced with the poison that is undoing us—and will finally do us in. By our own choosing, we can either secure an enduring future—or expunge ourselves from the story of tomorrow.
