To deliver you from the immoral woman. . . . For her house leads down to death, And her paths to the dead; 19 None who go to her return, Nor do they regain the paths of life—So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness.
Solomon. Proverbs 2:16, 18-20. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 19 of ANOTHER 30
Days of Wisdom. The consequences for throwing lust the keys, and taking a back seat, as the wiseman lays them out, are devastating. He certainly paints a worst-case scenario—a one-way trip to death. Is he exaggerating? Perhaps he’d seen it play out too many times and he’s hoping to save a young prince. He is not, however, exaggerating the impact on the person who truly sells their soul to sexual desire. Destruction is always, only, the inevitable pay-out. Let’s leave the extreme case alone. I think there’s something really critical here for all of us, that doesn’t require being the extreme case. And it’s this: throwing care to the wind and giving into sexual temptation, carries with it the significant risk that life will never be the same again. Life’s bridges all one-way. One can never cross the same bridge twice—especially in the reverse direction. Let me insert a word of hope, however, before continuing: redemption is freely given—and any who wish to embrace it may discover healing after trauma, whatever the cause. There is a road to redemption, even after great failure. And Scripture is full of marvelous examples. There’s hope for all of us. Yet Solomon’s point here, is not redemption—but avoiding tragedy.
Reality is, we never return to the place we were before throwing caution to the wind. Folly always leaves its mark. We are never the person we were. That ought to sober us.
