Nathan:

Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck,

Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.

Solomon. Proverbs 3:3 & 4. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 22 of ANOTHER 30 Days of Wisdom. Mercy and truth are a powerful duo. Mercy is a love that is enduring, kind, unmovable. Truth brings to this duo an added sense of dependability, durability. These twin attributes are of such an essential quality that God has used them to describe his own beautiful character. They cannot, in fact, abide alone. Truth without mercy can destroy and mercy simply doesn't exist if there is no truth or objective standard. What's notable is the way the wise man instructs them to be bound around the neck somewhere they can never be forgotten, that they should guide every action of the head and heart. So what is mercy? It's being patient, kind, compassionate, even when it costs maybe even dearly. It is that capacity that chooses to love regardless of the merit or worth of the object of its love. In fact, infusing those it loves with value in truth, it is, on one hand, simply living aligned with a clear grasp of the nature of reality, which helps a person keep a clear level head. And on another it is being a person who is trust?
