When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your
soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you. . . . To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words, Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God.
Solomon. Proverbs 2:10 & 11, 16 & 17. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 18 of
ANOTHER 30 Days of Wisdom. One specific kind of evil the writer had in mind, was the temptation of illicit sex. He’s obviously aimed his writing at young men—perhaps writing to a young prince preparing to take the throne—or with a young prince in mind. But the essence of his counsel is easily applied to both sexes—and in any occupation in life. It could as easily be a charming middle-aged executive seducing a subordinate or knock-out teen girl seducing a class mate. While Solomon specifically has the violation of marriage vows in mind—and that’s a really big deal—sexual temptation of any kind is the doorway to a dark road of brokenness. Whether abandoning a marriage—and throwing a partner on the rocks of heartbreak and into the uncertainty of a new future. Alone. Or tossing care to the wind in a college fling—the path is one strewn with the mangled bodies of the seduced. Solomon had come to recognize—through personal experience—the power of sexual desire, and the devastating consequences of being driven mad by it’s erotic charm. No lasting good has ever come from throwing caution to the wind and tossing the keys to sexual desire. Certainly human sexuality is a rich gift—but wisdom says it must never be in the driver’s seat. Ever.
