“My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake
the law of your mother; For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck.”
Solomon. Proverbs 1:8 & 9. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 6 of ANOTHER 30 Days of Wisdom. The writer doesn’t miss a bit. He gets right to the point, starting with the young: listen and learn from your parents. And treasure the wisdom they give. Just think for a moment, where would the world be right now, if every kid, in every home, had taken this one piece of advice to heart. What if every kid carried all the best lessons from childhood forward: Always tell the truth. Don’t cheat. Clean your room. Take care of your stuff. Don’t drink. Don’t steal. Be kind to others. Don’t be a bully. Stop hitting your sister. Don’t stay up too late. Brush your teeth. Eat your broccoli. Don’t burn a hole in your wallet. Sure, our parents didn’t always give the best advice—but I’m guessing more often than not, the stuff they really tried to teach us, mattered. And Solomon cleverly drives his point home, cuz he knows how much status matters to us. You wanna look good? Wanna stand out in a crowd, 24K solid, gold chain shimmering in the lime-light—then take your parents wisdom to heart. You’ll be the stand-out in life—for all the best reasons. And hey, if you’re not a kid, here’s the take-away: build on the best advice of those who’ve gone before, from parents to mentors, grandparents to teachers, and that good advice will be a greater luxury than an eye-catching mega-mansion or a head-turning, high-dollar wardrobe.
