"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise
wisdom and instruction."
Solomon. Proverbs 1:7. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is day 5 of ANOTHER 30 Days of
Wisdom. Today’s polarized cultural climate could use a healthy dose of the wise man’s counsel—that anyone who despises wisdom and instruction is a fool. That is, anyone who’s too proud, too committed to their own opinions to listen thoughtfully to a other perspectives, has chosen the path of ignorance, not wisdom.
Once we arrive at the place where our views are above question or challenge, we have committed ourselves to the path of ignorance, and the potentially devastating results. The determination to follow a course of ignorance has become an increasingly mainstream occupation, at least here in the States. Social media has provided rich soil in which ignorance breeds like rabbits—from innocuous memes to viscous lies. From half-truths to full-on alternate realities. And the cable that holds this all together: human beings who are over-committed to their opinions or their preferred ideological group. We are at great we risk of becoming a nation of fools—and by that I mean, a nation of individuals who refuse to entertain the possibility of being wrong. A nation of individuals unable to learn from each other, across racial, political, gender and other national divides.
