Nathan:

Be angry, and do not sin.

Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.

The Psalmist. Psalm 4:4. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 9 of 30 Days of Psalms. Anger can cause us to behave savagely—like a cornered, wounded wolverine. Anger, however, is not the problem. It’s what we do with it that matters. The Psalmists council when confronted with angry emotions, is to reflect on it, rather than allow it to drive us to irresponsible aggression. Should anger cause us to act at times? Yes, without question—but it should never be allowed to cause us lose control. When we pause to quietly reflect on our anger, it gives God the chance to bring clarity. Often our anger self-centered in nature, and not a reflection of real injustice. In this case, anger must yield to the healing grace of God. While in other cases anger may lead us to take corrective action or intervene in a dangerous situation. This clarity, however, only comes to us when we refuse to be driven by anger, and instead take time to reflect before we act.
