30 Days of Psalms, pt 1. Trees.

He shall be like a tree

Planted by the rivers of water,

That brings forth its fruit in its season,

Whose leaf also shall not wither;

And whatever he does shall prosper.

The Psalmist. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 2 of 30 Days of Psalms. Like a tree. I was recently talking with friends about giant organisms. On land, there are no single living organisms larger than trees. These vast cellular structures can absorb a ton of carbon dioxide in their lifetime and process well over 1 million gallons of water during that time. Which is a problem if you’re a tree growing in an arid region. Trees need water. A tree growing along a ribbon of water in the desert will grow strong and green. For humans, God’s law of love undergirds the happiness of every creature in his vast creation—and the more our lives come into harmony with his grand purpose, the richer our joy. Living in the light of his love is very much like a tree sending its roots down beside a river in an arid land. The way of rebellion may be full of glitter and pizazz—but it cannot sustain the soul. It’s shallow, short-lived joy, always ends in ruin. All who rebel against the law of love, the law of life, have only trouble ahead. Choose love. Choose life. Choose to grow by the river.
